Biology

From Salish Sea Wiki

Biology pages include information about specific organisms. We use abbreviated traditional taxonomies, developing subcategories when warranted by platform content. For example there are Salmon pages within the Fish category, but we currently only have a general category about all Birds. Because Vegetation is so important to stewardship and of interest to current users, we dive into Flora, organizing species into funcitonal groups as a teaching resource. There are currently categories for Shellfish, Herps, Fish, Birds, and Mammals. This is an area where the platform does not intend to serve as a complete manual of life (better available elsewhere), but rather a collection of information to aid stewardship. In addition to types of creatures, we include categories for Life History which is used for information concerned with patterns of migration and reproduction within a population, often important for conservation. Similarly, Behavior is used to describe what we know about how individual animals make choices, also important for human decisions.
