Varanasi, Usha. 2003. Review of "Efficacy and Economics of Riparian Buffers on Agricultural Lands." Memorandum to Robert D. Lohn.
A memo provided by the Northwest Fisheries Science Center to the Northwest Region of the National Marine Fisheries Service that provides a critique of a report generated by an agricultural interest group that suggests that 10 meter buffers are sufficient to address potential impacts from agricultural practices. The critique suggests that GEI 2002 poorly represented cited literature, relied of grey literature that could not be located, discounted the function of large wood in streams, failed to consider cumulative and chronic impacts, and fails to consider the complex risks from biocides to stream ecosystems.
