The Washington State Department of Ecology is a state agency whose mission is to protect, preserve, and enhance Washington's land, air, and water for current and future generations. Ecology's innovative partnerships with local, state, federal, and tribal authorities support environmental work throughout the state.
Ecology has a host of diverse programs that affect ecosystem management:
- Shorelands and Environmental Assistance
- Flood Management - including participation in the flood management system, and the Floodplains by Design program.
- Wetlands - including regulation under the Clean Water Act in conjunction with USACE
- Shoreline Management - which includes implementation of the Shoreline Management Act, and Puget Sound Characterization Project
- Management of Washington Coastal Atlas including Oblique Shoreline Photos
- Implementation of National Coastal Wetland Conservation Grants
- Watershed Planning authorized under RCW 90.82
- Coastal monitoring & analysis program (CMAP) - conducts research by mapping and monitoring Washington's coast to better understand physical changes to our beaches, bluffs, and nearshore zones
- Water Quality - including TMDL and NPDES efforts.
- Water Resources - focused on management of water rights and setting in-stream flows
- Waste to Resources
- Hazardous Waste and Toxics Reduction
- Environmental Assessment Program
- Spill Prevention
- Nuclear Waste
- Toxics Cleanup
- Air Quality
