Historical ecosystems retained water, storing runoff in Groundwater. Groundwater supports Changes in Land Use particularly development of Transportation infrastructure. Low Impact Development attempts to mimic the functions of natural systems. Climate Change is anticipated to exacerbate the impacts of development. Degraded groundwater storage affects Stream Temperature and Salmon. The Effects of Forest Management on Stream Flow are just beginning to be understood. What are examples of restoring distributed catchment and infiltration as a proactive restoration strategy?
Notes[edit]
- USGS Studies in Desert Landscapes may inform our temperate efforts.
- Ecology's Stream Flow Restoration Program is a new program that may support these efforts.
- Ducks Unlimited has explored subtle earthworks in agricultural landscapes to increase water retention in Floodplains to support duck habitat, and provide agricultural benefits.
