Eutrophication

From Salish Sea Wiki

Eutrophication is an anthropogenic problem, where nitrogen is released in the coastal waters, resulting in increased biological oxygen demand for the decomposition of algae blooms, which exhausts oxygen from the water column, resulting in dead zones. Nitrogen originates in Agriculture, where industrial nitrogen fixation produces fertilizers that are imported and spread in watersheds, makings its way to rivers and streams. The other large source is release from Wastewater treatment plants associated with Urban Land Use.
