Hood proposes a scale-dependant relationships between slough area, slough channel length and slough area found to be consistent among many sloughs in the Chehalis River estuary.

Hood has been developing similar observations in the Skagit Delta and the Snohomish Delta with the Skagit River System Cooperative

This work warns against attempts to develop more channel habtiat than can be naturally maintained based on basin area, and proposes the use of a population of sites to establish reference conditions for habitat restoration.
