Adaptive management as defined by Walters & Holling 1990, and many other authors in the scientific record, is a practice that combines project management and scientific research, wherein experimental designs are integrated into management actions to improve understanding of ecosystems. The term is now commonly employed by the project management community to define any management action where the outcome is uncertain, and where monitoring and additional management may be necessary to reach design objectives. The more scholarly use of the term improves clarity of communication, and is encouraged on the wiki.
