The Skokomish Indian Tribe are the descendants of Twana-speaking people in the watersheds surrounding Hood Canal.. The Treaty of Point No Point in 1855 established a reservation on the edge of the Skokomish Delta. They are governed by a 8-person tribal council. They have been leaders in restoration of the Skokomish River, and negotiation of agreements Tacoma Public Utilities around the operation of the Cushman Dam on Lake Cushman, beginning with Skokomish Delta Restoration, and now restoration around the Skokomish Confluence. The Tribe was key in developing the Skokomish Watershed Action Team, which integrates US Forest Service management of Headwaters with the more agricultural lands of the Skokomish Floodplains. Throughout these efforts, The Tribe has worked closely with Mason Conservation District (MCD) sharing funding and project leadership.
