Prairies and Oak woodlands are a uncommon ecosystem type that occurs on dry gravelly post-glacial soils. There are are suite of species unique to Prairies several of which are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act or are species of concern under state law. They have historical been maintained by tribal communities by burning and cultivation. They are an anthropogenic ecosystem, that provides diverse resources for historical tribal communities.

- Scatter Creek Watershed is an important watershed at the westward extent of South Sound prairies.
- Joint Base Lewis-McChord has some of the best quality prairie remnants maintained by fires caused by bombardment training.

- The Center for Natural Lands Management is a key partner in South Puget Sound prairies. http://www.southsoundprairies.org
- The Cascadia Prairie Oak Partnership is managed as a regional resource by CNLM.
- Friends of Puget Prairies leads Prairie Appreciation Day which occurs in every May.
Notes
- The Nature Conservancy played a critical role in prairie protection, but much of this work has been transferred to Center for Natural Lands Management.
- Volunteers are the primary source of seed collecting and processing and Scott's broom control in prairie management.
