The NW Fisheries Science Center completed an assessment of the 22 Puget Sound Chinook populations to determine if consideration of the habitat and population status might inform management, particularly under the Endangered Species Act. The potential for purposefully sacrificing some populations as being "less important" was politically controversial, and the effort has not strongly informed Salmon Recovery
