Chronology

  • 1980-1994 - Populations severely depressed
  • 1999 - HCSR chum salmon listed under the ESA
  • 2004-06 - Hatchery supplementation winds down as part of recovery planning.
  • 2012-17 - Populations rebound with reduction of hatchery production and curtailment of harvest
  • 2018-19 - Returns crash, attributed to "The Blob" and ocean conditions.

Notes

  • File:Tuohy et al. 2018 chum non-natal habitat use.pdf - provides a summary and assessment of nearshore use differentiating between summer and fall chum.
    • Summer chum show high use of embayment habitats, as much as in river deltas
    • Prioritizing restoration sites in proximity to natal streams may not provide greater benefit for summer chum in Hood Canal, given rapid distribution and broad use of nearshore habitat.
