Documents

From Salish Sea Wiki

The document category is used for all pages that provide information about published reports and articles either uploaded here or published. Documents may be either uploaded to the wiki when public domain (on-wiki) or located on another server or physical location as identified by a link when copyrighted or not released for posting by the author (off-wiki).

Social Contract

Uploading and providing analysis of documents should be consistent with our social contract. Don't violate copyright. Provide impersonal, evidence-driven analysis. Use concise language.

Creating a document page for an off-wiki document

To create a document page, just type in a standard document name in the search window, and press [Go]. This will give you the option of creating the page. Please include the following elements in a document page:

Standard name - Use a standard in-line citation perhaps adding a few words as the page name, like this: Simenstad & Cordell 2000 salmonid habitat assessment

Document Template Code - Don't forget to put the template code {{document}} at the top of text.

Categories - Pick some appropriate categories and add them to the top of text (there are examples provided on the edit page).

Standard Bibliographic Citation - Please provide a text string that will let someone cut and paste a standard bibliographic citation.

Link to Document - If the document has a stable link location, than please provide it. Consider a google scholar search if you have any doubts about the stability of the document link.

Google Scholar Search - If the document is under copyright, you CAN insert a google scholar link, like so:

[http://scholar.google.com/scholar?q=Simenstad+Cordell+2000+salmonid+habitat+assessment&btnG=&hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C48 Google Scholar Search]

We just cut the search result address added some brackets and produced the following results: Google Scholar Search

Analysis - Why not tell us why you think the document is important, strong or weak. Don't forget to sign with three tildas like so: '''~~~'''. This will create an author stamp with a link back to your user page. Anyone cane provide analysis. If you don't have time, at least do the first three steps and then flag it with the raw template--like so: {{raw}}--indicating some sloppy work that needs fixing.

Uploading file to create an on-wiki document page

The second way to create a document page is to actually upload a document to the wiki. This is a good choice if there is not currently a stable web location for the document, or you just want to contribute to our archive.

Follow the Upload a Document link found on any document page and follow instructions.

Creating a redirect page for easy citation

If you create a on-wiki document page it will have a complicated page name like File:Simenstad & Cordell 2000 criteria for restoring salmonid habitat. To make it easy to cite, you can create a redirect page, called Simenstad & Cordell 2000, which points to the full document page. In this way you can cite a document page by just typing the file name into your text like this:

Salmon like to eat invertebrates ([[Simenstad & Cordell 2000]])

Which will produce the following text: Salmon like to eat invertebrates (Simenstad & Cordell 2000). A click on the link takes you to the full document page using the redirect. Learn how to create a redirect page.
