Common pool resources are a class of resources that are accessible to a group, where it is difficult to exclude use, where the resource can be depleted through over-utilization. Classic examples are fisheries, rangeland, and water supplies.

Notes

  • Elinor Ostrom's analysis of common pool resource management systems earned her a Nobel Prize in economics (Ostrom 1990)
  • Her theories and examples provide an alternative analysis to Hardin 1968 and his "tragedy of the commons"
