Many places in the Salish Sea are islands. Islands are unique social-ecological systems, because residents depend on a very finite set of resources, and are relatively disconnected from global resource flows. This causes islands to frequently serve as incubators for bioregional thinking, because island residents may experience more direct impacts from ecological impacts. In particular, islands typically survive on rainfall and a sole-source aquifer, such that island water resources are vulnerable to landuse, degradation and overuse.
